FAQs
When should I reach out for an estimate?
Please reach out for an estimate before you reach the post-production stage.
How much should I budget in my project estimate for a colorist?
Every project is different, which is why it’s best for you to reach out with project specs and I’d be happy to send you an estimate.
What gear do you use?
Color Gallery’s studio is based off of a Mac powered DaVinci Resolve platform. Please refer to the About page for detailed studio specs.
How do I prep my project for color?
Please reach out regarding your project so we can discuss your specific needs and specs. Once project specs are shared, you will be supplied with a list of the assets and their specifications needed, along with a detailed color prep guide to walk you through the process step-by-step.
How is your work different from the color work a DP would do for me?
While there are many DPs who are capable of crafting beautiful images within DI platforms like DaVinci Resolve, having a professional colorist who’s sole craft is to meld artistic intuition with experience and knowledge of the rigorous technical specifications of the color process in the digital age will save you and your DP a great deal of time in unfamiliar workflows, additional education, and will also provide your project with greater collaborative strength. Ultimately, hiring a professional colorist will help you efficiently deliver not only beautiful imagery, but also technically sound imagery.
Can I begin color on a project that isn’t yet edit locked?
Yes, I can accommodate projects with rolling edits. Please reach out regarding your project’s specific needs and I’ll be happy to establish a plan that best fits those requirements.
I’m editing my project now. What should my timeline resolution be to get the most dynamic and flexible color?
Please edit in the highest resolution your footage and editing machine with allow. Projects can always be down-resed downstream in the post production pipeline. Up-resing however will cause image fidelity loss.
Can you work with a project that was edited in 1080 or is 8 bit?
Yes, however higher resolution and bit depth is always recommended. Some hue keys may be difficult to pull cleanly with lower pixel resolution or bit depth.
How can I help avoid my client’s “temp love” on a project when transitioning into the DI?
Please color manage your footage when you are editing. Using your camera manufacturer’s log to Rec709 display lut can be a helpful solution. This allows you and your client to see a display normalized image vs. in a log color space. On some longer format projects, a show lut" can be developed and utilized to help the client view the image with a look that is in part representative of the final post-color lock look.
Do you take pro-bono work?
Each year, Color Gallery invests in up-and-coming Directors and DPs by selecting two passion project films to color pro-bono. Submit your film for consideration by contacting Cody.
